Signing, password protection and properties

A digital signature proves who signed a document and that it has not been altered afterwards. A password determines who may open it.

Digital signing

  1. Click Sign → Sign and draw a rectangle for the visible signature field. For no visible field: Sign invisibly.
  2. Select your digital ID: from the Windows certificate store (also smart card or USB token) or a .pfx file protected by a password.
  3. Choose the signature format: PAdES B-B, with timestamp (B-T) or for long-term validation (B-LT, B-LTA).
  4. Choose where the signed document will be saved.

Certifying defines with the first signature which changes are allowed afterwards. Create a separate ID for internal use with Create digital ID.

Verify signatures

On open, netPDF checks existing signatures and displays the result in the status bar. Verify signatures creates a detailed report with the certificate chain, revocation status, timestamp and subsequent modifications. Load EU trust list also recognises qualified signatures from other member states.

Set password

  1. Click Document → Set password.
  2. Enter the password to open twice.
  3. Optional: a different owner password required to change rights.
  4. Select the rights: All rights, Read and print or Read only.
  5. Save the document. netPDF encrypts using AES-256.

To remove protection, open the document with the password, click Remove password and save it.
